The Slow Burning Fuse

an atheisitic anarchistic scorcher

today in anarchist history

17 May 1957: The first issue of the Federación Anarquista Uruguaya (FAU) magazine, “Lucha libertaria” is produced

The document bears the number 171, since it is actually the newspaper ” Voluntad” continuing under a different name. The journal still exists today.

The FAU was founded in 1956,  by anarchist militants to be a specifically anarchist organization. The FAU was the first organization to promote the organizational concept of Especifismo which identifies a need for a specifically anarchist organization built around a unity of ideas and praxis to theorize and develop strategic political and organizing work.  The organization, while anarchist specific, involves itself with the building of autonomous and popular social movements via social insertion, which is seen as being rooted in Bakunin’s ideas of the necessity of social activism.  The goal of social insertion is to create a link between anarchists and other social movements.  Unlike authoritarian left wing organisations this is not merely for self-promotion, but also with the genuine aim of improving communities while building a base for anarchist ideas through involvement in the struggles of the rank and file.
